Can't talk to PLC with laptop.

Having just bought Easy Relay Pro software for the 4,5,6,7 and 800 series PLCs and having also acquired a new laptop, (Toshiba Equuim ) I'm having a problem getting the PC to communicate with the PLC.
The computer has no serial port so I've had to get a USB to serial port adator lead to do the job.
It works fine on other PLCs but not Easy Relay.
It tells me that there is a communication problem and check the cables, interface, etc.
This I've done but to no avail.
Any ideas ?
